my 300d ebay purchase report...

this is the car if you didnt read the 1st thread.. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4554778688&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1
condition is fantastic, body work and leather. the car is soooo smooth and quiet, and i thought my 190d 2.5 was really smooth!! lots of power when driving.
only bad point he didnt mention in the description was that the sunroof needs some upwards pressure before it will slide back, but once its done the 1st bit its ok. In the description it says it runs unevenly when started for a few secs.. i havnt done a fully cold startw ith it yet, all the warm starts were fine except one where it started right up but the revs went to 900rmp for a couple of secs and i revved it and it then fell back to 600rpn then was fine. generally- really pleased, aslong as the fuel consumption is reasonably good, my 1st w124! oh yea, and the outside temp guage reads a constant 54 deg c

Love the color combination and the options we don't have over here like that climate control system. Are those the factory wheels?

I believe this refers to the outside temperature (ambient) LCD display
on the dash, not the coolant temp.

Sounds like the sensor lead is broken.

Yep, that reading is bad either way. That's around 120* F, way too low for coolant on a warm engine and hopefully a lot hotter than the outside temperature.

123, I am happy to hear you got the car and that it turned out very well indeed. I may be the only other '87 124 diesel driver with 99/2000 CLK wheels! At least I will when I get new tires later this week (they are on order). I'll post pictures when I get them mounted. 16 in wheels should improve an already well handling car.
As for the engine in your car stumbling, these engines will do that if there is the slightest leak in fuel lines at the injectors, where an air bubble can form overnight. Seals at the injectors are probably the cause, and aren't expensive. I had to replace lifters in mine, the PO had been using synthetic oil, as did I, but the rattling they made never got much better. It was pretty noisy when cold but not going to hurt anything except my pride, actually. I just wanted the car to start and run quiet, as quiet as a 603 normally is which is pretty quiet actually. I wonder if the NA 603 sounds like the turbo version? (I love the sound of a 6 cyl diesel!)

I had a similar problem in a 1987 300TD. The delivery valve seals where the fuel lines meet the pump were leaking, and the injection pump would lose prime overnight, meaning lots of air would get in resulting in hard starts. Once started, it would idle rough for a few minutes. Look for diesel leaking at the top of the injection pump - it's a sign of leaky delivery valve seals.

thanks for the tip on the leaky injectors, i will check that out today its very smooth and quiet when warm. the 54 deg c referred to the digital display of the ambient temp... in england its more like 16 deg c, so fair to say something is not right!!!! love the car though! especially at night.. even the switches on the air verts to open/close them are lit up haha!
