Oil

Which is the best engine oil to use in an '82 300d with c300k miles?

I've heard a lot of opinions, but cant really find any info. My owners manual reads to use anything from 10w - 20w50 with all kinds of vescosity in between.

I've heard from other MB owners, who swear by 30w, but I would prefer your recommendations. :)

I have no favorite brand but I always use 15W40 diesel rated oil with soot control

Wow, an oil question, this is a first.
Just joking, simply stick with what your owner's manual says for the temps that you are living in. My '83 TD owner's manual says that 15W-40 is the recommended weight (viscosity) for temps down to 23 F. So since you are in Charleston, that would mean 15W-40 would cover your local year round temps., for sure. Here in CT, for the Winter I switch down to 10W-40 then go back to 15W-40. for the Spring/Summer I use the same oil in both the diesels and the SL, which happens to call for the same viscosity.

Delvac Super or Delo 400 for regular use and for truly extreme conditions, consider Delvac-I or Delo 400 Synthetic, although I have seen the regular Delvac Super and Delo 400 handle high heat conditions with ease, I would use the synthetics on extremely low temp conditions.
