I read that in my chiltons diesel book from the 80's. Pretty impressive if you ask me...considering it was the late 70's...a inline 5. And mercedes hadn't even got hot into the production of the turbo diesel for cars yet.

Course the C111 had a few more...areodynamic features
Did the book mention what the Cd of the car C111 was? I wonder how it compares to the Boxfish car?

It didn't...they were just going "hey these mercedes turbo diesels are sweet"

Chiltons loved the w116 body 300sd...it was like a review book with buying ideas and stuff.

The C111 was just in there for the record stuff...the rabbit diesel (with experimental turbocharger) was in there too...they were getting over 50mpg in 1980 too...

The C111 would be a sweet ride. I bet it could be rebuilt in carbon fiber with the new 314hp E420 CDI motor

I read where wind resistance goes up with the square of the speed. At 140 mph, the wind resistance would be about 5.4 times more than at 60 mph.

They mentioned that the maintenance free particle filter performed flawlessly. Myabe they'll let us have them here in the People's Republic of ColleeFORnya now.

What was particuarly ballsy about the record run was that Mercedes invited the press before the fact and let them watch, whereas, I have heard that most record runs that are attempted like that are only revealed after the fact.

17 MPG and almost 170 MPH. That's about 10 gallons per hour, one gallon every 6 minutes.

Now we know why they stopped every 2 hours an 10 minutes, they were out of fuel.

My furnace only burns 1/2 gallon per hour. Imagine how much heat had to be dissipated: 1.35 million BTU per hour minus the mechanical energy developed.

I read in a magazine on the wife's doctor's office table (Car and Driver?) that Mercedes recently held a rather embarrassing event for the press. They were going to demonstrate a radar-based crash avoidance braking system and set up a test run inside a large shed filled with fog. The radar senses your approach on another vehicle and applies the brakes.

Well, it seems the shed was metal and had an effect on the braking system's radar. Apparently they crashed four or five late model MBs into one another for the press......

The speed endurance record is certainly impressive. If they really wanted to impress me though, they'd run longer. I'd like to see 500,000 miles. Oh, but it's an aluminum engine - sorry, I forgot.....

oh no it wasnt a sedan at all. it was a very tidy little two seat mid engined coupe with a long tail and a big tailfin.

it was very slippery and a small frontal area.
