Trust you to think of the simplest way. Now me, I am a massochist. I would beg, borrow or steal an ammeter to do it. No, you are right. That would be an acceptable way to do it.

I usualy just cycle the glow plugs on a cold engine. Then feel around the glow plug. If it's warm the glow plug is working.

That it went from not starting at all, to starting right up would lead me to believe that it isn't individual GPs. I would more suspect that the GP fuse is cracked or the GP relay wasn't making good contact.

A change of both fuel filters and by all means replace the darn weeping lines. They are not helping you at all. Make sure ALL the GP are working, so fix the reason the dash light is not on. The fuel is not the issue, but maybe your car is not in adequate condition to start, no matter what fuel you had in it. Just coincidence you put in the fuel and now no start.
