The guy at the yard is either pulling a fast one or he a) doesn't know what a turbocharger looks like or b)can't count to 6. Get your paperwork out and hound him for a refund.

Edit: Nice! A free extra engine? Are they sending you the correct 603 now?

Is the waffling you are referring to in the picture below?

the answer

is that the waffling is on all turbo 617s. presumably adds stiffness to the block. i have always thought it looks pretty wild.... cool.

To answer your original question, can a 617 fit into a 124? The answer is no

The 617 if placed in a 124, you could not close the hood all the way, also, you would have to cut away portions of the firewall to accommodate the oil filter housing. Other adaptations would have to happen as well. I know this because I had considered installing a 617 in place of a 603. I did careful measurements and it just wasn't practical to do.

Try Ron's European on Merritt Island, FL. They had a wrecked 87 that they had maintained severa years. I saw it last year and they might still have it. As I remember, it had less than 150K miles on it. Their phone number is 321-452-9097. Not sure what they would ask for it or if they would ship or not, but it might be worth your while to call.

The 617.950 turbo engine does not have the waffles. It was made for the w116 300SD. It also does not have a crankcase breather oil trap and return line, just a pipe to the turbo inlet.
