Brake Caliper Bolt Reuse

The online factory manual (42-140) states that the self-locking hex bolts M 12 x 30 may be used only once. What is the reasoning for this? Could I just use loctite and reuse the bolts?

The self locking feature is destroyed once the hex bolt is installed and removed.

You could certainly use Loctite and accomplish the same thing.

I've reinstalled them without Loctite. My personal opinion is that the self-locking feature is overkill. Ever see a bolt back off after it has been torqued to 80 ft.-lbs.? I haven't.

Whatever you do, don't cover the threads with Loctite. Just a drop or two. You'll realize your mistake when you need to remove the calipers the next time.

Same here, I just use a tiny dap of blue loctite on the end of the bolts and then put them in, never had one come loose yet!

loctite

I have done it both ways (had new bolts come with a bearing kit once). After combined 25K miles on both cars, no problem with the Loctite option.

I never thought twice about using blue loctite.
