my theroy was that if r-134a was 50% as efficent as R-12 then 2x as much would give you equal performance. guess not.

I think we can say for sure that that is not the case...
It would be the case if the evaporator and condenser could dissipate twice the BTU's of the current units. You would need additional fluid, but, probably not 2X as much.

I think it would be more dependant on the inside volumn of the system.... and the ratio of 134a to R12 would remain the same... thus a system twice the size would still use 80 percent of twice the R12. This has more to do with making sure you have good pressure differential within the capabilities of the compressor. Over filling works the compressor very hard to maintain the requested cooling ( and then fails to deliver at some point ).
