Parts
As I look into buying my first MB car. I have heard that the parts for these are high priced. Is that true in comparison to other cars?
I looking at a 84 or 85 300SD. Thanks |

Also, on average, a Mercedes replacement part from an OEM source will tend to last longer than the typical Pep Boys/Discount Auto/Auto Zone/whatever parts you might buy for a Chevy, Honda, Dodge, etc.... This will save you money in the long run. The same goes for the labor: The more work you do yourself, the more money you will save. If you are not at all mechanically inclined, and plan on having all the work done by someone else, then you probably want to look at some other car. But if you know what you're doing, and do some or most of the work yourself, you'll be VERY surprised at how much money you save. Preventative maintenance goes a LONG way on these cars as well.... If you treat your MB well, it will treat you well. It also pays to hang around here a lot, and make friends. You'll find this place a VERY valuable resource if you own an older MB. There's always plenty of friendly advice, expertise, experience, and guys with parts to sell at reasonable prices. Mike

A lot cheaper than for something like a late model Honda. However, if you don't shop around you can easily pay WAY too much for certain items. It depends, and is always changing. With the dollar in the gutter, you're paying more for imported parts compared to a few years ago, but that's not isolated to MB.

I have found that not to be the case, stay away from dealer and get parts from reputable source. If you can do some of the work yourself these cars are relatively easy and cheap to maintain, that is unless they have been ignored by PO

There's a saying around here that goes, "Nothing is more expensive than a cheap Mercedes." Long periods of neglect and/or disuse will usually lead to lots of high-$$$$ problems. Mike

I don't understand what everyones problem with the dealer is. I've gone there numerious times for some parts (especially small parts) and found its cheaper to get it from the dealer (no shipping charges) if the order is under $50. They also have the computers with parts diagrams right on the desk in front of you and my dealer lets me look at them when I'm in the middle of a project.
