Diesel car market

I'm starting to loose interest in purchasing a 98 or 99 E300. This current market is crazy.

On Ebay watched a 99 E300 w/ 69,000 sell for $25,200.
I can "buy it now" a 2000 E320 w/44,000 miles for $18,500.

$6,700 upgrade for a one year older diesel engine car with 25,000 more miles???? I think a brand new CDI is only $750 more than a gas model. What's the upgrade on a brand new big 3 pickup, $4500?

I sure love the diesels, but $6700 in my pocket would sure feel good in the gas car. Ya, I could sell a E300 for more down the road, but I think I'd have to drive about 70,000/year to make the numbers work.

The used E class diesels are generally more expensive than the used gassers. If you purchase the diesel it will last you, with good maintenance, about 250,000 miles. The gasser E class might give you 150,000, although I don't have too much experience with the gas W210 so I can't say for sure.

If the new V6 gasser is anything like the previous six-cylinder Mercedes gassers, it will last just as long.

I think the M112 engined V6 Benzes are some of the best bargains out there. Mileage is comparable to the diesel, and the engine seems very friendly to the DIY'er.

From all my homework, I second that. That E320's in inline configuration last while.

The inline sixes(SOHC) are supposedly very rugged, with the exception of the head gasket. They'll go past 150k easy if maintained. 300k is very possible.

With the greater electronics on the new diesels..

I'm not sure any of the old rules still apply. I've seen gas M103 and M104 engines with lots of miles. Yes, MB 6 cylinders have had headgasket leakage problems.

Seen the same thing on prices.. so I am not looking for new diesels anymore!

Have ya'll noticed the price of the early 80's diesels lately. Compared to 5 yrs ago they have gone up good for a low miles car with records.

The VW TDI's are crazy too. I see late early new beetle TDIs with 100K+ miles going for $10K+ sometimes. That's like 50-60% of their price when new. I inquired about one on craigslist for $6500 but that had 165K on it already!

I was thinking of buying one for an SVO project and getting 40-50 MPG sounded good too, but those prices are crazy. They are probably pretty good little cars but for that price I would just buy another older MB...better car for less $$$
