I have a 300D with a factory manual trans. The throwout bearing has gotten noisy and I will have to replace it before I drive the car much more. If anyone would be interested in any specific marks or measurements I would be happy to check while it is apart. Let me know.

It may be a while before I get to this job as our plans for the fall may take us out of town for an extended period of time.

the manual

said that the four cyl engines have the crank and flywheel balanced together. it said that the 617 ENGINE is balanced on a machine. i am thinking that that means wo the flywheel. it follows then that the 240 flywheel may not be neutral. they are planning that it is not.

my engine is a 83 euro 617 which when rebuilt was found to have abad crank due to hb monkey business by some po. we replaced it with a crand from a us non turbo 300 about a 79 or so. we were unable to find any indexing marks. my machinist may have sent it somewhere to be checked for balance, he cant remember for sure. but we installed it at random after doing extensive searching for a way to put it on that was exclusively correct. the engine is smoothe as silk. smoother than any five i have seen or heard or driven. i conclude that the five flywheels must be nuetral.

jim had a similar experience with his rover/240d. he is having good luck with that too. but ... who knows? some must be more out of balance than others.

Exclamation balance

I just transformed a OM617A (300tdt) to manual and brought the auto (flexplate) flywheel to a balancing shop. It was 13 grams off balance. I let them transfer the inbalance to a manual flywheel of a OM617 from a mercedes-G jeep. They had to remove 28 grams of iron to make it in the same inbalance as the original flexplate.

Does anyone have a picture of the factory marks that should be on the crank or the flywheel? I made my own marks but i can't figureout what should be the factory mark.

Cheers!
Floris Hermans
