According to the book in the glove box:

Severe Operating Conditions
In the case of severe operating conditions or heavy use mainly in city traffic or over short distances, frequent mountain driving, poor roads, dusty and muddy conditions, hard and sporty driving etc, it may be necessary to carry out maintenance work at shorter then normal intervals, as follows:
Engine: Oil change with filter change every 4000km (2500 miles).
Automatic Transmission: Fluid change without filter every 24000km (15000 miles)

For light duty work the fluid and filter should be done every 30k miles.

If the car is old and you don't know when it was last changed thats a good sign its due also.

Put a drop of fluid from the dipstick on a paper towel, the put a drop of fresh fluid on the towel next to it. By comparing the two colors you can get an idea of how dirty the fluid is. I change at 25000, and the fluid is not dirty at that mileage.

Is not all that much work, I did it by undoing the cooler line and let her drain out.
I heard u can also drain the torque converter too. Thats a bit too much work for me.
U should feel the car more responsive after new oil, more rev happy.
one vOLVO I had , the tranny oil was real bad, kind of seeing some semi solids too, wonder how she had carried me all these miles. the car felt much lighten up after.
U don't need to change it all to see improv.
I used the old oil as oil spray in lieu if WD40. Funnel her into a oold spray bottle. Use in non critical application. A lot of door hinges, everyday lube job etc doesn't need Military grade clean oil anyways.

When u fill up, be a little careful, can overfill quite easy.
