question on putting the '85 300D back together

Which intake/exhaust manifold would ya'll use?
I am inclined to use the ones on the left in the picture. I'm also wondering if I ought to dress up the manifolds soemwhat like polishing the intake and installing some high temp coating on the exhaust manifold. What would ya'll do?

Also, I'm considering changing the turbo around a little and get rid of the recirculation device. The 300SD does not have one. Based on what I have read I won't really seen a performance change if I eliminate it.

Jim,

Do I hear some unusual excitement in the air about this project?

I'm afraid I'm an old fuddy duddy. I would use whatever is original for the engine and chassis you're putting together. I would bead blast the pieces and put them on.

Sorry to be such a lackluster old codger.

Enjoy,

By all means use the nice clean ones in the photo, plus it doesn't have the egr mounting so you won't have to block it off.

The one's on the left look beautiful.

How did you get the intake to look that good?? Is it coated in any way?

The exhaust manifold also looks very good. Just sandblasted? I sent the manifold off the SD down to Jet-Hot and had it done. They do a very good job and it comes back looking brand new. Kind of pricey, however, at $125.00. Furthermore, you can't see the exhaust manifold, with the exception of the very forward end, so the good looks are largely moot.

Now, a further question on the exhaust manifolds. They differ from each other. The older one on the right has the EGR port but the one on the left does not?
Where does the EGR come off the one on the left??

I had the EGR port on the SD tapped for 3/4 NPT. Installed a stainless socket head plug and it looks fantastic.

I have a feeling the manifold came from a 116 chassis 300SD. They didn't have egr's.

get both Jet hot coated...........I may do mine in the future...thats a ceramic coating that keeps the heat where it should be and not where you don't want it...

Yes those are 1978 or 1979 300SD intake and exhaust manifolds, the 1980 has EGR....those were the only OM617 turbo manidolds with no EGR. No performance gain.....but they are cleaner ....

They are off of a '79 300SD. Everytime I go to pull a parts and find a set I grab them.
I'll look into the jet hot thing. Thanks for everyone opinion.
