I completely redid the carpet in my car, one large sheet of gray carpet that thanks to my talented mother was cut to fit exactly. My orange carpet was completely shredded, moldy, and extremely smelly. If it's in terrible shape go ahead and rip it out, the results are a lot nicer than the original.

I agree with jbaj007 on this. I used dye from vinylpro recently and I'm very happy with it. Pick a color that you would like to live with, perhaps a shade of burgandy a bit darker than the current orange. If the carpet is in good condition but just a funky color I would ABSOLUTELY NOT spend $1000 and a lot of work to change it when you can get great results with $30 and less work. Changing good carpet when recoloring is all you need would be a sin.
