I'm gonna regret asking but who is asking what transmission you have? MB transmissions with 6 bolt pans use the same filter and gasket. That's a solid 15 years of MB ATs.

I read another post in that someone mentioned being asked about two different transmissions. He never got an answer.
Sixto, Carquest or Napa are my only two nearby choices for parts. CQ was today. He mentioned two numbers a 722 sumtin and a W?? I assumed it was the 722 as I read that somewhere. Anybody know if Napa carries Mobil 1 products? I am reading all the past posts on filters to figure out which filters I need to order. CQ/Wix seems to be a good start based on most of the posts. I will order ahead of time online later. Right now I finally have the car insured/registered and want to get it on the road. These filters won't be in long anyways as I don't know if the PO used Syn or dino and figure when I do the oil again at 3k I will do the tranny, PS, Brakes, rear end again. then let things go to regular intervals after that. (BTW I am certain I got it right by having him get me the 722 filter kit.)

transmission leak
Took my MB 87''300sdl to mechanic awhile ago he says front transmission
seal on the pump needs to be replaced $300 labor I called another mechanic and he tells because the car has 194,000 miles that the trans out to be pulled and all the disks seals be replaced $3000 or get a rebuilt from MB for $5000 He says because of the mileage on the transmission dis- turbing it just to put a seal on will cause other problems specifically reverse would go out if he just replaced the seal; therfore rebuild the whole thing $3000 or get a factory rebuilt $5000! So, do I just drive it and let it leak or get seal replaced for $300? Any suggestions apprec- iated! John |

Often the front seal leaks because the bushing in the front pump is worn. If it shifts well and fluid and filter are changed about every 30K you could easily get many years out of it. $300 to drop the tranny and replace the seal is a bargain, IMHO. $3000-$5000 for a rebuild is not, because you can get a nice clean, rebuilt trans and torque converter shipped to you from Sun Valley Transmissions for about $1500. Then get the $300 guy to R&R whan you really need it.

Transmission
Pete I apppreciate your answer and your honesty. I jusy talked to
another mechanic he wants $600 for the seal replacement; so I agree $300 is a good deal! Where do I get the seal; and is it called front pump transmision seal? When I changed the trans fluid and filter, woulld have over filling caused the seal to go? I was told the distance between the two marks on the trans dip strick is a cupful not a quart? Is that correct? Appreciate Your Help John Gray |
