99 E300 Boost Questions

Couple of questions:

1. How much is stock boost pressure for this model

2. How much higher can I take it safely?

TIA

You can raise it all you want but without additional fuel you're wasting your time. Boost doesn't make power on a diesel without fuel, either more diesel by way of a modified delivery system, or something like propane, which has a flash point low enough to prevent premature combustion.

I already have it chipped and it smokes now when you nail it. SpeedtuningUSA has fixed it for me and they said it can stand a bit more boost.

Glad to hear "Speedtuning" thinks it can stand a bit more - will they replace your engine if their modifications result in a melted piston? Is the extra quarter or half second off the 0-60 time really worth it?

If your car is not fast enough for the wife sell it and replace it with an E430 - W210 turbodiesels are fetching absurd prices on e-bay. You could sell your car replace it with an E430 and have enough $$$ left over to pay for fuel for 5 years.

A second.. or half second increase in a 0-60 time from an increase in boost WILL NOT cause any damage to the engine. I'm quite sure, and very confident you can add atleast 5 more pounds of boost safely.

Reason I asked is that they said it smokes and it could go a little faster without screwing up anything else. Also people have said favorable things about it and it has powered the car up a little more.

That would be one option. However, that would also not solve anything since I can never leave well enough alone. Even if I got the fastest thing MB could make, I would still screw with it trying to get that littme bit more out of it.

Installing a pre-turbo pyrometer is the ONLY way to tell if you have everything tuned right. Mabye you can get another 50hp out of it, mabye you are already running at 1300*f.

Depending on when the smoke happens, you may or may not need to raise the boost. If it's off the line, there is nothing you can do short of turning down the fuel or installing NOS (until enough boost build up). If it's during the mid-high rpm range, then yes, slowly turn up the boost until it goes away.

My belief is one NEEDS a pyro gauge before touching any of the fuel controls other than the ALDA. That's just me. I've seen plenty of melted pistons, warped heads, thrown rods, and had my own over-boosting experience to make me be weary about "performance" tuning.

I absolutely agree. In fact, it may prolong engine life. Increasing 0-60 times and all,

"Honey, if I am faster than others, that guy with the road rage might not be able to catch me and do damage to the car and me. So it is a safety thing not a speed thing. That is why I need a supercharger for the truck"
