Diesel Pumps and Filters

There are many instances where dirt from dirty diesel in stations gets into the car's tank. Somebody posted pictures showing the grits(crap) in the car fuel filters supposely from dirty diesel fuel. I am very selective in putting diesel in my tank (don't ask me why). I only go for high volume stations, and stations that I know have recently replaced underground tanks. In the stations that I frequent, I noticed that some have filters installed near the pump, but some don't. Do you know whether this is a state requirement or is this at the discretion of the gas station/gas distributor/gas company?

My guess, and I do not know, is that it is at the descretion of the station owner.

Also, I think you are a bit anal...it is why there is a filter installed in your fuel delivery system, actually there are two filters...when they clog, you will know about it immediately as your engine will begin to run rough, or smoke, or display unusual idling etc.......

I wouldn't worry too too much about getting dirty fuel....I personally have never experienced such and I've bought fuel from some pretty skanky places!

You think I'm anal! Well, you have not experience my pain. My car stalled after putting in diesel fuel from a station that had crap and water in it. I had to tow it home, and I missed work the next day. It took me days to get it running again. The fuel filters are supposed to last 10,000 miles, not 1000 miles after being to a dump station. Now I'm careful where my diesel comes from.

Its worth being a little anal!

I don't know about you, but I'm not keen on changing a filter by the side of the road when its 10 degrees out while in my work clothes. I could do it if I had to (I do care spares and tools), but its not high on my list of "Stuff I'd like to do today."

The filters will prevent the grit from destroying your car, but they won't prevent you from having to hassle with it.

I like truck stops, when I need petroleum diesel. They are quick, efficient, friendly, and they have clean fuel.

Plus, the windshield washer squeegies have reeaaally long handles at the truck stops, so you can clean the entire windshield from one side. I love that.

peace,
sam

I always use the same very high volume truck stop. My SDL's pre filter was a year old and it looked brand new. Their was two very small specs in the filter, not bad for a year.

The specs were probably from me actually. Sometimes the funnel I use to dump the Power Service in is dusty and I don't always wipe it off that well, I figure thats what fuel filters are for!
