Update on my totaled '85

I don't know if anyone remembers but my '85 300D got totaled about a month ago. I ended up getting about $2,900 for it from the insurance company. I guess that's not bad but I spent that alone in just the last two years fixing things. Anyone else get a similar amount for theirs after being totaled?

I'm selling the car (for next to nothing) to a friend of mine who is going to have the left front frame rail pulled straight. I found a new fender, bumper and headlight assembly for $100 for it. At least it will be back on the road.

Luckily, the E300 needs nothing (knock on wood). The cash is going back into the bank to start replenishing my account after the purchase of the E300.

Thought I would give another update. The car was pulled at a frame shop, new parts attached and got a new paint job. Total cost to my friend was $1,200 - $500 for the car, $100 for fender, bumper and headlight assembly, $400 for the frame shop and $600 for a new paint job (Best $600 paint job I have ever seen). It looks better than when I owned it. I miss it but I sure like my new one so I guess it all worked out in the end.

Post of pic of it.

How did your friend get the car for $500. Normally when an insurance co. totals a car they take it and send it to the auction.

I would love to post pics but I don't have the means of uploading them. I purchased the car back from the insurance company (after they totaled it) and then sold it to him. He got a really good deal. I just rebuilt the front end, added new Bilstein shocks, fixed the A/C, had a new radiator and timing chain installed and new brakes, rotors and pads all the way around.

My '85 was totaled right before Thanksgiving, rear ended by an inattentive lady. I paid $2500 for it and the insurance co gave me $3700. $200 to buy it back so I still wound up a grand ahead. That still doesn't fill the hole it left but I just purchased a body from a junkyard that is exactly the same colors inside and out for $500. I'm going to do a motor swap because the good body has half of the motor picked away. Hopefully inside a year part of my old car will live on.

usually

you can buy back the wreck from the inurance co for about .10 on the dollar. so if book value was 3000 you can buy it for 300. if he bought it for 200 he got a good deal.

My insurance company determined the resale price by looking at what local junk yards would pay for the car. They sold it back to me for somewhere around $275.
