rear engine support (transmission removal)
I normally use a search function and find all the answers i need but i can't figure this one out.
in all the tranny removal threads everyone is talking about removing rear engine support. I managed to remove all the bellhousing bolts, no extensions for starter (even though they were rather tight), flywheel bolts, but now i can't slide tranny back because it's in almost horizontal position, so I wonder where is that rear engine support is so I can drop tranny and engine a little. your input is appreciated very much. |

There is no rear engine support. The only thing holding the engine in the car is the two side engine mounts and the rear tranny mount. Since the tranny is bolted to the engine the "rear mount" is the tranny mount.

I don't know why then the tranny won't tilt down?

You got all the bolts out and even the flex plate ones?

Flex-plate bolts = torque convertor attachment to flex plate (flywheel). Tranny won't slide down if the torque convertor is still bolted on to the flex-plate.

Tranny is held at the front by the bellhousing bolts and the torque convertor bolts, by the rear at the tranny rear mount AND drive shaft. Remove all those and the tranny will slide back to disengage the crankshaft.

I want to thank all of you for you replies. may be it's just me, but it's still won't come out.
flywheel bolts out, bellhousing bolts out, bellhousing is 2-3 inches away from flywheel, so engine and tranny are apart. the only reason i cant get it off is because it's in almost horizontal position and the tunnel is not enough for tranny to come out, tranny has 2 pieces sticking out in the middle of both side of the tranny, and they hit the undercarriage. if the transmission would be angled it would slide out, I was thinking about jacking up the front of the engine or may be lowering the jack under tranny more, but I thought to come out right it would be better to have engine and transmission parallel. |

i think the problem is that the tranny is separating from the torque converter and hanging of it and torque converter is still next to the flywheel, i tried to pry it off but it won't come off, i will try to put the tranny back on the torque converter and remove both of them.

I just did this,... torque converter stuck in crank
Just tonight (December 27th, 2005) I was separating tranny from engine
and had to turn the engine at front crankshaft bolt with a socket and breaker bar to get the engine to spin and break free the torque converter from the flywheel/crank at rear. The torque converter has a big-ol stub that fits in the crank. This worked for me. I kept thinking that somehting was still attached. Maybe that's it. |

Did you disconnect the shifter linkage?

yes, again i think the problem is that the torque converter is stuck to flywheel and tranny won't slide off it, so i'm going to try to pry TC out tonight, like rhodes2010 said.
is there any chance of bending flexplate, while trying to pry TC out? Last edited by w123amg; 12-28-2005 at 05:54 PM. |

Seized engine.
I'm trying to get the tranny out of a car with a seized engine (1980 240D). Since the engine won't turn, I can't get the torque converter bolts out. Last time I separated an engine/tranny, I don't remember having removed these bolts. The TC was still bolted to the flywheel when I got the engine out (1982 300TD).
Anyway, that tranny does NOT want to come off. Guess those TC bolts are the reason? Any insight? Jay. Jay

Yes that would be the main culprit.

I know this is of no value to you now but next time pull the engine with the tranny or did you need to leave the engine in?
