Need More Power for my 300SD

Hi everyone, I have a 81 300SD. I used it in a tarmack rally we have here
in Newfoundland , Canada. It is a 7 day race covering over 1300 Miles, with
almost 400 Miles of NO SPEED LIMIT on local roads. Its called:
www.targanewfoundland.com

I am building a proper race car for next year. I am useing a 89 190E. I want
to use a 3.0 5 cyl Turbo Diesel from my parts car. I want more power. Can
anyone help... I was told to turn up my turbo and try a propain kit from
Bulldog. I also would like a stick shift, Is there any manual trans that will
fit my engine.

I also saw a video clip on " www.500sec.com " called "diesel burn"
It was a 190 Diesel with a stick shift laying rubber to third. With a wicked
sounding engine. Thats what I NEED... If anyone can help, I will be very thank
full Thanks . Jay

what section did you race in last year? Sounds fun to do. I wish I could find a place to open up my 300sd. There is a lot of info if you search for some of your questions, like performance in a 190E, etc. I bet there are a lot of people here that would like to help you out also.

Have fun...

...I have probably one of the most modified 617's on the forum (other than perhaps docter berts...but he is going for efficency mostly).

You can check out my threads to learn a little...then decide you want a 6 cylinder crossflow engine

I ran in the touring. So I did not need a roll cage. It is the most fun you can have with your close on. I need to find out what is the best way to turn the boost up on my turbo. Cheepest is best to meClick image for larger version

Since you might be sorta new to diesels...I'll try to clue you in.

Turning up your boost will do little/nothing...these are not gas cars.

Look up some diesel theory and do some searches...then report back

I have rebuild several MB diesels. I have never tryed to boost power. I know that I need more fuel and boost to start building more power. Were do I start?
I need Max Power from the poor bastard to even keep up with the rest of the pack. The engine only has to last 7 Days I want to leave with a twirl of back soot and wheel well full of white.
Also will the 4 speed from a 280 hold up to the added power and pounding....Click image for larger version

I'm not sure I'd put a 600lb OM617 engine in a 190e, but this guy bought the sort of injection pump you'd want:

http://www.***************/forum/showthread.php?t=596

Was the car in the video you saw black? Probably had a 24v 3.0L with Holset HX40 turbo.
There is a fellow in Finland who is working on the ultimate OM617 engined race car, I'd like to see how that turns out.
If you like videos of mbz diesels and smoking tires:

You should ask this question over in the "Performance Paddock" also.

I'm sure you will find loads of info over there with the SEARCH feature.

BTW fix your tranny before you start screwing with the power

Its already stressful for the tranny let alone starting out with one that is already compromised

Turning up the boost will get you a slight gain in power.
For a good flame war on the subject read from post #26 on in this thread http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=132474&page=2

To see actual data on boost effecting power output for the same amount of fuel read this report ( note it covers emissions too, so you'll have to look for it but its in there )
http://powerlab.mech.okayama-u.ac.jp/~esd/comodia2004/A6_1_022.pdf

To get a real gain you need more boost and more fuel.

When I am at full load pedal to the floor acceleration I get about 10psi boost according to my gauge, is that what it should be? What is factory spec?

Really? They rolled off the line with 13psi?? So I assume I just need to adjust the wastegate to allow a few more psi right?

Or you can leave it there and not worry about it

If you drove a 300SD with the boost at 10psi and another with the boost at 13psi...I doubt you would see much difference...

...atleast I don't. My boost is at 13psi becuase with the increased fuel I need more air...not becuase I think more air is going to give me more power.
