shaking and leaking 83 SD

Not sure whats wrong. And dont go blaming wvo my dads been "borrowing" it and its gotten nothing but diesel in the tank for the last several miles. But when i start it up it sounds like a hammer hitting a wood board then it shuts off. I turn it back on and keep the pedal to the floor for about 20secs and let it idle and its ok but now is very shaky. I should check the motor mounts for one but what else should i look for?

Also i have nice little drips of oil now and then on my garage floor anyone know where to look for a fix?

thanks guys

I will suggest that you check all of the Glow Plugs and the GP fuse first.

The description is somehat vague so you won't get too many responses.

After 20 seconds, is it OK, or does it still shake?

An issue with an injector can cause this problem if the problem continues after 20 seconds and is evident under all idle conditons. If one of them is really plugged and dripping, it can cause all kinds of havoc.

However, I'm still unclear as to exactly what is happening during the 20 second period. It will not idle, whatsoever, during this time? You must leave your foot on the floor for the entire 20 seconds?

during the 20secs or so im just holding the pedal letting the engine rev. After that then i let it idle it still shakes but the hammer sound goes away. It runs fine still goes and everything but when i idle at a stop light i feel shaking.

I'm guessing one of the injectors or prechambers is not functioning correctly.

Try this:

With it fully warmed up........and shaking..........crack the lines to the injectors one at a time. When that cylinder goes out, the engine will get noticeably rougher and the idle speed will drop.

You are looking for a cylinder where this does not occur, or where it occurs much less than the others.

If you are successful and find this cylinder, report back and we'll continue from there.

Take a 17 mm open end wrench and turn the nuts at the end of the hard lines (at the injector) by one-half of one turn.

Do this one at a time while the engine is running and observe the sound and speed change.

Naturally, the cracked line will dribble fuel all over the head.
