Wagon not level after sitting.
Hello all,
I've read a lot about how to adjust the SLS system in my 1981 300td wagon, but I couldn't find a thread on why the rear sags after a bit with the motor off. It does pump up right away though. Hope there is an easy fix. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks |

My quick guess would be a leak if it sags way down aftewards quickly. But not neseccarrily. I'm no expert but it is a possibility. Mine seems to stay in the upright position at least for a few days which is the longest I've had it without running it.

Your oil pressure is bleeding down. If it pumps right back up when started then thats my guess. I just dont know that much about the wagon suspension.

I'm thinking leaking oil pressure too. I know it is not leaking out of the system. Any rebuild kits out there?
Thanks |

I haven't looked but I hope there is if that is the problem. These components are EXTREMELY expensive. I would verify that this is your problem (I'm agreeing with the pressure thing as well if you know it is not leaking) then give Phil a ring and see if they make anything. If they do I'm sure he can find it for you.

you need to rebuild the height adjustment valve
It's the valve in the rear of the car that controls the hieght of the car. Assuming nothing else is leaking...
It's a one day project and you can get a rebuild kit from Phil, it a messy job but not techically difficult and takes about a day. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=54894&highlight=rebuilding+wagon I have seen another post on rebuilding it that I used, but I can't seem to find it. Mine did the samething until I fixed... |

You definitely need to rebuild the SLS valve that's located by the rear diff. It's not difficult or expensive to do, it just takes some common mechanical sense and a willingness to get hydro fluid all over yourself. I wrote the rebuild proceedure up about two years ago. This should help:

if i left my wagon over night by the morning it would be sagging, but pump up within about 5 secs of starting so i assumed it was normal

That is not normal. The wagon should hold it's rear height without sagging even if left for weeks. To the best of my knowledege the internal leaking doesn't do any real damage (other than maybe to make the pump work harder) but it's not a hard fix and the car sure looks better when the it's not sagging.

Count me in on the saggy TD club. No leaks but sags after a day or so. Pumps up immediately upon restart. It was suggested to me my accumulaters were going but now I know better. Thanks for link to the correct repair and part number.

Bad accumulators cause a harsh, unsprung ride. The sagging is either a leak (which is obviously easy to spot) or an internal leak in the rear actuator valve. If you aren't loosing fluid it's the valve.

Thanks to all!
I'm going to hopefully tackle this and also the K1 spring kit over spring break. I'll try to post some pictures.
Thanks! |
