WHHRRRRRRUUUUULLLLL noise on right hand turns

I have an 87 300 SDL. 255k
About 4 months ago it started making a howling noise when I made slight (very slight) drifts to the right and would get louder the more I turn to the right.... Then it dissappeared untill last week. It is back!

Any ideas of what it might be? I am thinking maybe bearings... Ideas please.

Thanks much

I'd definitely pull the rotor and take a good look at both bearings.

When was the last time they were repacked? Hope it wasn't 255K ago.

Sounds like wheel bearings to me too. I would try replacing them or repacking them. Its probably just better to replace them.

Don't know the last time... I took the cap off and the grease looked pretty fresh.

The outside ones look easy enough to get to... how do you get at the inside bearings?

take the hub/rotor off.

where is the noise coming from?
How about doing 3 lefts?:D

When the rotor/hub comes off, the inner bearing is captured in the hub with the grease seal. You must pry the grease seal out, however, if you are not very careful, you'll pry against the bearing and trash it. If you intend to keep the bearing, it's better to hook the seal and hit upward with a mallet.

You need new grease seals to complete the job........and new bearings.......depending on the condition of the old set.

Place the rotor on a surface with the outer side up. Inserting a long punch through the hole where the spindle was, drive out the bearing seal. Make sure you have something clean to catch the bearings when they drop out. When you order the parts to DIY you will see how it goes together.

(edit: Brian is fast on the draw!)

That is not a bad idea....

Sounds like the left front wheel.. but it is hard to tell. If I press the brake while making the turn it stops the howl... brakes are fairly new.

I jacked it up and tried to shake the wheel and it seems to have NO play, no rattle, no grinding.

Thanks for the quick replies guys WOW!

I am going to pick up a new set of inside and outside bearings, new seal and grease. Bearings and seal are only $24 bucks and in stock...

What kind of grease do you all recommend?

Thanks again

NO play is not good, it should have just a little.

When I say no play I mean grabbing the top and bottom of the tire and trying to shake it back and forth. Very tight. is that bad?

The spec is .0005". You can't feel .0005". If you feel the rotor move back and forth, the clearance is higher than desired.
