Help! Tranny shifts way hi, jerks! 300D

Just bought a 1981 300d (non turbo) It revs extremely high before it shift (1st - 2d at 17 mph, 2d - 3rd at 35 mph. And it shifts with a wheel screeching jerk. What could be causing this. Former owner sez it ran fine, then he parked it for a while, then it started doing this the next time he toolk it out on the road.
Thanx,

ed

vacuum hose unplugged

There should be a black vacuum line to the transmission that you can see in the engine compartment. Make sure it is connected correctly (according to the vacuum diagrams) at both the engine vacuum 3/2 valves and the transmission modulator.

You're getting no vacuum to the transmission.
