does an ALDA exist on non-turbo's

hi guys, feel a little embarrassed for having to ask this, but the reality of it is that i have never dealt with the alda valve. My past two MB"s have been non turbos, and i was always under the impression that NA engines did not have the elusive alda valve,is this correct? and what exactly does this thing do?
is the valve that dash pot looking thing that is on top of the IP? because i do have one of those on my 240. anyway, always wondered and have read many threads about the ALDA,guess i have had too much time to think about the 240 today,so i thought i would ask
