Project Planning - Trip to Mechanic for 1987 300D

Hey all, thought I'd post up what I plan to do to the car and my progress so far and what not. I'll edit this post tomorrow I'm about to clock out. I'll get more into detail about future plans and current issues. For now what else should I ask my mechanic?

Completed items!

Taking the football off my engine
Fuel Filters
Air Filter

Known Issues:

Sun Roof is so broke - I'll just seal it off for the weight savings.
Rear View mirror fell off after the car was stolen.
Speedometer is slower than real speed.
Car Rumbles at certain RPM/MPH (I'll ask the mechanic about this)
No AC - Might be taking this out for turbo
I can drive with no key in the ignition! Must jiggle keys for heater to work.

Things I'll ask my mechanic:
Vac Hoses

ALDA Boost Sense Line

ALDA Adjustment

Vacuum on the Fuel Tank

Air In the Fuel System

Low Boost Pressure

Timing Chain Elongation, Valve Adjustments, and IP Timing

Dragging Brakes, Differing Tire Size, and Boat Anchors

Suspension rubber front and rear

Things I want to upgrade:

Purchased Items:
Install Injectors
Install new hoses
Install Shocks

Items to Buy:
Springs
Alternator
Trunk Arcade Setup
Rims and Tires
Camber Kit
Sway Bars
Gauges
Tweak boost, IP, Alda
Brakes - Off the 500's
Intercooler
Cams
Turbo

Exterior - Body kit, Paint, head fog and tail lights
Interior - Looks like a homeless guy has been living in the car =/ I want to upgrade seats and everything!

Computer Navigation and LCD's

WVO conversion - Not sure if this would be great in heavy tuned vehicle.

Ultimate goal is to get on a magazine cover. Immediate goal to make the ride as nice as my 91 300E

450Hp's is the official goal!

I just got quoted for a full inspection at $195 how's that sound?

I didn't give the guy the list of things I wanted to check over the phone, it was after hours and he was doing paper work >_>

Man thats a big project, probably be cheaper to just buy a nice E300D.

I know from experaince that a body/interior resto can run $10k-$12k with little effort. Throw $1k on that for a body kit, $1k(at least) for wheels, maybe some H&R springs.

Cool project though, keep us updated.

Yeah I really wanted that car I was talking about earlier but the guy never called or emailed me back.

Carpet and all the trim getting replace will set me back $3,000 according to this hole in the wall shop in national city, SD

I live close to TJ so I'm hoping I can get it done at a shop there without getting robbed haha.

I've wanted a project car since my import car days back into 2000. I stopped going to car shows but I still hang around car models =D

But yeah, first SPEED!

Well if you want a project you have come to the right place.

The W124 is great from a suspension standpoint. Lowering springs, better role bars, better brakes are all availible for them. Heck you could even go nuts and convert to a 500E suspension with Brembo brakes and some massive sway bars.

Now for power you will want to talk to the Finns. Talk to Dave(GSXR) he is active on their forum and he can probably help you as well.

Pretty much if you don't want too go to radical you can add an intercooler and bump boost up a bit. If you want some serious power though you will have to add a much larger turbo, with a massive intercooler, and have some custom mods done to the IP. But think 400hpish!

Alright first thing first will be to drop off my car at the mechanic and get myself back to stock performance!

Then where should I go?

Sounds like I should hold off on buying that turbo... what kind of power seats I can fit into my car? Mine are shot =(

I'm not W124 expert, I know in general whats out their but no specifics. Buy a W126 then we can talk.

I do know 603's though, hold off on that turbo for now. The stock turbo is more then able to over boost the engine. If all you plan on doing is adding an intercooler then the stock turbo should be fine.

I don't know about rebuilding the injectors because I have not yet done this myself. But installing the nozzels into the injectors looks pretty simple. Of course you need to have them tested to confirm good spray pattern and adjust pop pressure when you are done. Unless you have the tools you have to pay for that part.

As far as removing the injectors, if you can change spark plugs you can change injectors. The only "special" tool you need is a torque wrench. You also will need a deep socket, *I think* 19mm on the 603, but I don't really remember.

Someone told me about having to use a shim or something... and that's why it would cost $300 to get the nozzels installed.

Oh and then my mechanic said the IP has to be retuned... eh I'll see what the specialist says. My mechanic is sending me over to a injector service.

IP does not have to be touched. However checking the IP timing, using the RIV light is probably a good idea. Not because you replaced the injectors, just because it should be checked.

I wouldn't have anyone who thinks the IP has to be tuned work on that car. No offense to them but they just don't seem to know much about 603's.

Ask him this:

How do you time the IP on a 603, and what is the IP timing supposed to be set at?

If the words RIV light and 15+/-1 degrees don't come up, find another shop.

haha yeah

the family mechanic doesn't know much about diesels but he cuts us good deals. He told me to go to this injector shop and he thinks they may charge $300

After pay day monday I'll report on how much they quoted the job to me.

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I appreciate this forum much. If there was a community chest I'd donate. For now I try to buy stuff from mercedes shop =D
