what is correct ip timing setting a euro '83 300D?
I am in the process of putting the crushed oil pan Euro 300D back together and unfortunately I missed the timing chain setting when I positioned the crank and had to move the chain one tooth over on the cam spkt. I pulled the ip where I could set it and now I need to know what degrees to set it to. Keep in mind this is a different ip than the US version (actually looks more "adjustable"). Does it get set to the same spec start of delivery as the non turbo 300D? What are those numbers? The only specs I have are for the 616 and turbo 617 models. I figured if I inserted it in with the spline lined up with the engine at 25 degrees BTDC I should be fine.
The engine number is 617 011 09 01. tia

Does the IP have the port on the side for insertion of the RIV tool?
If so, you can look inside the port with a strong light and find the notch. With the notch dead center on the port, the crankshaft should be 15°ATDC on the power stroke. I'm assuming that the 15° spec is common across all M/B diesels. |

the 617 engine requires use of the "drip method" for accurate ip adjustment.your proceedure will give a good basic timing.do a search on "drip method"

If I am not mistaken its 24degrees btdc, same goes for OM616 turbo as well.

The "requirement" for the use of the drip method is strictly dependent on the availability of the port in the side of the IP. |

i beleive most 617 engines came with the bosch mw pump, the 603 has a m style pump with the timing check port.however this is a euro model.

Yea - I'll ease out to the shop here in a few and take a look at the ip to see if there is a port for the tool. I got the tool.
Check out how much "neater" the fuel injection lines look on the euro version compared to the US version. In addition, the euro ip looks like it is somewhat more flexible than the US version in regards to external adjustments.

Most definitely a normally aspirated engine and yes - that is the shut off valve on top. I'll probably set it at 24d btdc and then do the drip test on it after it is in the car.

I have a "85" euro 616 and it does'nt have the port for the "tool"
Never had to do timing on this one but I thought it was like the US cars, 24 degrees BTC. I have a "82" euro 617 sitting in the barn if theres anything i can check out, let me know.
