I went by the pumps yestarday and reg unleaded was 2.49 and walked by again this afternoon and i noticed it was 2.79 which can only mean that diesel is probably in the 3 dollar range. with this summers prices only expected to climb, i really want either a svo or a wvo system. my only hang up is how to do it. has anybody done this in a 300 SD? i have a 1981 with 170,000mi on it. i want to make it myself rather than buying a kit. i understand the whole idea that you have to heat the oil but i have no idea how to. some suggest using the coolant but i have not even the first idea on how to tap into the coolant supply. ive ofund a website that sells filter heaters and injection line heaters, but i assume i need more than that. i also dont have a clue on how to be able to change from the fuel tank to the oil tank after the motor is warmed up and when i need to purge it. if anybody has any plans, pictures, and/or advice/procedure on how to convert my 1981 300 SD to a two tank wvo/svo system that would be great. also if you know of any websites besides eBay on where to get the parts that would be great too.
thanks in advance

I've got a greasecar kit in my TDI Beetle, and I'm pretty happy with it. I'd say the main drawback was that it cost me nearly $2k installed, and it isn't as effective at heating quickly in the cold weather as I'd like.
Having said that, many folks have done a DIY using Dana Linscott's plans here: http://vegoilconversions.netfirms.com/ I bought his plans for filtering WVO (in my basement to my wife's non-amusement). That works out pretty well for me. I have a 240d mbz, and am thinking about doing a grease kit for it at some point. -Chuck |

Greasecar, frybrid, plantdrive, etc. Are overkill in my opinion for an old benz.
kit:$329.95 http://www.kenneke.com/veggie.html Inline Glowplug heater: about $60 http://smallglowplugheater.blogspot.com/2005/12/small-glow-plug-heater.html Both put together is a perfect and simple system, you get to switch over to veggie in less then 2 minutes! and is cheap!

Agreed,
Most systems are overkill for these cars. Just yesterday I mixed 1/2 gal RUG with 5 gal 100% WVO Canola . I had 1/2 tank diesel left in the tank. Smelled great, ran quieter as well and I feel that it was smoother but I think that part was just in my head. So if in the spring of Portland OR I can run it slightly mixed the simplest filter and heater system will more than suffice. I did the overkill method on my Ford PSD. But for this car it is going to be pretty simple.

Its not in your head, they run waaaay smoother on veg oil/rug mix than on petrol diesel, I couldn't even hear/feel mine running from inside the car when I was running on soy!! It was like driving a gasser!

Glad to know I'm not crazy. I sure love running veggie and my car does too. The smell just makes me smile. I like to rev it at stop lights just to smell it
It smells way better comming out of my MB then it does my Ford. But then again my ford always stinks. If it wasn't for the cold winters and knowing that I could do way better for my car for uber cheap I would just run a 10-20% mix all of the time.

cheaper
couple days ago around here (north FL) diesel was 0.8 cheaper than unleaded. That use to be normal, but it had not been cheaper here for over a year and a half now. Not sure if it being cheaper is still the case or not. As you know it can change daily.

How would i know? well we mix $3 worth of regular diesel with B100 in the passat just incase it gets cold at night Plus in order to get the tax exemption for use of alternative fuels we have to mix a minimum of 1% diesel or b99 for road tax and federal tax purposes.

RUG is $2.69 here
Diesel is $2.79 here I have been collecting WVO all winter. I just tapped into it. I put about 3 gallons of WVO in my tank and topped off with about 5 gallons of diesel. It smells and runs great. My fuel filters came the other day so now I have a little insurance in the trunk also.

300sd vegi conversion
Quote:
hey youngbenz i am currently converting my 82 300sd to vegi. its really quite simple! look up hose-n-hose system to heat the vegi with coolant. your copper vegi line runs inside the coolant line going from your coolant heated tank to the engine. we just installed that yesterday. we ran the lines under the car. your diesel fuel tank is probably behind your passenger seat. right? is your injection pump on the driver or passenger side of the engine? you should check out the book from the fryer to the fuel tank it really helps give you an idea of how to work it. if you want to ask me any questions about my conversion feel free! and remember its not as hard as you think it is...really

I've been warned NOT to mix diesel with WVO because the wax will separate out and clog the filters, etc. out.
PM MattSD300. He's a WVO guru and so is tony from west oz. I would check with those 2 guys before I did any mixing. Might avoid headaches along the road. Another thing that I heard of recently....a local guy has been running WVO in his VW pickup. He attributes his blown motor to WVO. Don't know why or how, thats just what he's said.
