Buying advice on '93 300D & '87 300D
I just converted a 91 350SD (I know, I know..) to WVO and it went so well I'm looking for more! I have found a seller with 2 cars: a 93 300D 180k $6000 and an 87 300D 250k $4000. Both are automatics and look to be very well maintained and have been in his ownership since nearly new. I am 3 states away and trying to have them taken to a shop for analysis.
The 87 has been rebuilt at 180k (3.0L 603 engine & trans) and has the upgraded head from the 3.0L engine on it, new IP, but smokes under acceleration. MPG and torque look great for this engine (195 ft/lb at 2400 rpm). The 93 3.0L 603 engine is stock and never rebuilt. I know people don't like the aluminum head engines nearly as much as the older hunks of steel. My 91 runs great on vegoil and we're keeping our fingers crossed on that less than favorite 3.5L. The 2.5L in this 93 reportedly does not smoke under load but the torque rating is low, 165 ft/lb, and I wonder if it will be a dog. Also appears it was only made from 91-93. I'm not crazy about the older 80's benz models just due to sheer age and electronics of not the engine but everything else. Any diesel I buy will be a turbo and when you run vegoil that you collect for free and fun then mileage means less than power. Also, I don't want anyone blaming lack of power on vegoil. I've driven the past year's 16k on WVO in both a 6.5L chevy truck & suburban and my goal is to buy, convert, drive, sell and then supply with fuel. In Montana the game is wide open while we stroll thru our 'decade behind the rest of the world' plan (maybe only 5 years now...). Any personal experience with these engines would be much appreciated.
