If you're in the US, I just searched car-part.com for 1970-1985 Mercedes Truck and got a hit for a 1971 O309D 5-speed at Mr Ford Auto Dismantling in Los Angeles (323 583-8941).

I put a link to EuroTech in Kevin's other thread but I'm pretty sure all he needs is a standard bellhousing for the 616/617.

Yes, here's the other 309d. Some of them had the OM616 but others the OM314 or OM352 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_O309

Is there a 4-bolt M102? A 190E can stress an M102. How does it pull an O309???

I take back what I said. I think all 309d's are that larger chassis van. The smaller chassis vans were called 207d's or 307d's with the 616 in them (with the 2 and 3 indicated different rated carrying weights and the 7 for 70hp). But when they put the 617 in there, they couldn't call it a 309d--- 3tons and 90 horsepower since they already had the larger chassis van labeled a 309d so they named it the 409d instead. As far as I know, the 617 was never installed in the larger chassis vans, only the smaller chassis ones. I don't know if the transmissions in the larger chassis vans are the same as the ones in the smaller chassis vans, although as I already mentioned somewhere, I think the smaller chassis 5 spd is the same as what went into the G-Wagon.

I don't know. It's always astonished me how small an engine MB put in their vans. Now many people who have driven a 240d in the US would think it's a good idea to put a 616 in a van that big which can carry 20 people?

Here's a complete 5spd transmission plus bellhousing on German Ebay. If you search on the terms in the german description you will find some others too. The transmissions in the 207d and 307d should be identical to the one in your 409d.
Or a 4spd

You could probably buy a brand new transmission and bellhousing from the Indian company which now makes the same van in India with a turbo 616 and have it shipped to the US. Can anyone remember the name of that company?
