Talking Odometer and Speedometer stopped today 126

My Odometer (trip too) and Speedo stopped today. Any ideas why both would stop at the same time. Tach still works as well as other gauges. Fuses look fine.
Thanks for the help.

If they both stopped at the same time, I'd say it's most likely a cable failure.

This may be dumb question, but where does the cable go? How can I test it?
Thanks

W126's use an electrical pickup at the output of the transmission. W123's use a cable so look around where the driveshaft meets the transmission. I've never been under a 126 but on my 123, that's where the speedo cable comes out.

I got under the car this weekend... I don't know what the heck I am looking for. There is a wire and plug going into the back of the tranny near where the drive shaft connects.... I am not seeing any "cable".

Anyone have a good discription of what I should be looking for?

Is this this the best place to start with the trouble shooting?

Could the problem originate behind the dash/gauges?

Thanks in advance for any help you all can provide.

Alright... feeling dumb.... made a few calls... there is no Speedo/Odometer cable on the 87 300SDL...

Circuit board behind the dash is the most likely problem. Easy fix I hear... Speedo place said worst case senerio would be $190.

Guess I can live with that.

Anyone know where I could buy this circuit board?

You should pull the cluster out and check it. There might be a simple problem like a broken gear.

You can get a speedo on e-bay for a lot less than $160.
