What to do with stuttering windows?

My rear windows "stutter" when going up, the left rear will actually go to the top and if the switch is held down will "stutter" over and over I can imagine this is no good. I plan on greasing what ever is in the window mechanism. Any other suggestions?

TIA

If it stutters like that it means the two gears on the motor and the regulator have severe wear and are skipping, thats what the "stuttering" is, they need to be replaced or in a little while its going to stop working completely. Sounds like the end of the line for at least one of the gears in that window mechanism.

As an alternative, the window regulator may be bent, causing the gears to mesh improperly. You will need to take a look to find out which. Either way, it will not get better by itself, and may cause more damage if you don't fix it.

My driver's side rear window does that. I guess I'd better fix it but something like that is way down on my list of priorities, unless it fails completely, like the rear window on the bimmer did. Having to drive around with a trashbag taped over your window at 65mph makes you want to fix it really badly.

If it was stuck down you probably could have just opened the door panel, slid the window up, then stuck something in there to keep it up....a little nicer than a trash bag.

Follow up question to this :

My rear windows are very weak going up or down. You have to hold the button down, and sometimes help the window go up or down.

Think its a bad regulator or motor, or just frayed wiring passing thru doors?

They dont make any noise, just very weak.

Thanks,

Paul

Motor brushes could be worn/weak motors. Either that or a regulator with a lot of friction....but the motors are very strong when in good shape/new, so I would suspect those first.

I re-bent my regulator on left rear W123 (300D) to stop the noise.
We'll see how long it lasts.
