Glow plug Light

So I'm running late this AM for a meeting, I finally get some open road and hit 110 mph and I'm not sure if it was on before but the glow plug light was on. I slowed down to 80 mph and then it went away after a minute.

First signs of dying glow plugs?

Its a 1996 E300 with 108,000 on the clock.

thanks

happened again

Any ideas, this time I was doing 85-90 mph and the light came on! The engine temp was normal 87ish outside temp was around 75F. My only guess is the glow plugs are due for a change, but I start OK.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts

Easiest way to check them is by the plug going into the glow plug relay. Disconnect it from the relay and check each of the six points on the plug to ground. If you find one with high resistance, it's a "goner".

I would recommend changing them all regardless on how many you find bad.

Does the GP light come on when you first start the car cold? If not and if it comes on later it could be a burnt out GP. Jay

Thanks

No, everything seems to run fine. When I first turn the key the GP light is on, I wait and after 3-5 sec I crank it and starts just fine. The GP light goes out immediately. Then if i find my self on the high end of the mph the light will come on (only happened 2x ever and both in the past week), but goes out after I drop below 80 mph.

Apart from checking the plugs (I'm a noob to the diesel world) where is the relay on a 1996 E300 for the GP's? Any ideas on cost and ease of access. My 190E has a tempermental fuel relay but who can complain with 302K miles on the clock.

Thanks again

I think they've finally gone

My check engine light came on (perhaps the relay) and now the GP light is not on when I start up and will come on for ~ 20 sec once the engine is on and then go out.

Sounds like GP(s) are burned out and perhaps the GP relay. The car has 119K miles now and I experience no surging indicative of the resonator flaps issue.

Or am I completely wrong. I have an appt with my mech tomorrow, he'll sor it out (I hope).

How much is a GP replacement and what does the relay cost?? Is this a DIY (GP replacement..not relays (they usually are easy ) I can't imagine it being a little more involved than changing spark plugs but what do I know?

thanks

Want to put a tank in the trunk for WVO/SVO in the E300 Need to find a place to store my OIL!
Still procrastinating about the biodiesel/WVO
Made some biodiesel but so afraid to pour it all in - I've added some and think I'll supplement my fuel to see how I make out

Made some biodiesel but the process scares me - methanol fumes are not your friend! Need to do this outside.
