190d - quick help identifying part

Sorry for all of the 190d posts.....but thanks in advance!

I found this picture on ebay....and noticed this car (a "1984" like mine) has something on the air box I do not.

Can someone tell me what this device is?

I've got an '85 190d with the 2.2 and mine also does not have that part. It looks like it may be a vacuum operated egr valve of some sort. Is your 2.2 running O.K.?

Runs like a top!!

Leaks a little coolant towards the back of the head on the intake side--i'm trying to figure out if it is the fuel preheater (bought a new o-ring) or the gasket (guessing no).

Other than that, it's great..and amazing how much of the original equipment is functional!
