crankshaft dampener and pully gone

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=153266

goodyear just called. they say they need to pull the timing cover. 500 bucks to remove the timing cover.

the dampener has a piece that mounts inside the tc and they don't see it. could the dampener and the pully have just fallen off? we heard a rubbing/grinding noise for several miles before the dash warning lights came on. i was on one side of an overpass and drove to the other side yto pull over. couple hundred feet. there was no loud engine noise.

do i just get a dampener and hope the crank is not broken?
help.

Goodyear??? I'd get it out of there and into an independent MB shop that knows these engines ASAP.

well when it was just the belt hangin' down and they replaced it last that was the first port of call.

now the indy here in town has a surplus of cars on the lot that need fixin' so i am not sure i want to take it there. plus he is the only mb indy in town and they have a bad attitude.

i so dislike this.

Seeing as that engine does not have a timing cover, I'd get it out of there ASAP

Yeah, I can just imagine getting out the sawzall, or oxyacet, and the bronze brazing rod to put it back on...
um, tempting but no.

A v-belt is pretty easy to change out for yourself, especially on a 240D. What did your AC compressor sieze up or something? If the damper and pulley are gone, it's time to inspect the nose of the crank. Then you have the ordeal of getting this whole thing fixed properly. I suspect they tightened the belt too much, caused the pulley bolts to shear off one by one, bye-bye pulley and bye-bye damper. Such is the pitfall of having people at chain-type automotive places mess with your car. You're going to really hate me for writing this but you should have changed the belt yourself. Our MBs are engineered in ways that are completely out of the range of comprehension of the inept technicians that tend to work at the chain shops.
You know what you have to do, you have to take it to somebody who knows what they're doing, otherwise we may see this car for sale very soon. In the 'Parts' section, no less.

yeah, why?

if the cars are built beyond the comprehension of ordinary service techs its prolly beyond mine also. these cars prolly will be for sale soon as i cannot afford them any longer. all sales will most likely include a full tank of biodiesel.

Goodyear, now there's some eminently qualified Mercedes-Benz techs. Ask about getting a four wheel alignment while you're there.

Pete's words of wisdom from post #4 tell you all you need to know about taking it to Goodyear. I won't take my Ford f-150 to Goodyear.....

I know this doesn't help you, and I'm sorry. I just have had, plus know others who have had bad dealings with Goodyear and Firestone places.......

If the jerk-wad independent is truly a miserable guy, and is the only one around, that must be how he stays in business.
I hope others close to your location can help.
