I need to pull my speedo on my 87 SDL. Do need the extractor hook tool or can I improvise?

Well if you don't care about the dash you can pop it out with a flat blade screw driver. The cluster is simply a friction fit its just sitting their.

MB makes an official tool for this, but it seems like you can use a stiff wire, almost like coat hanger wire but a bit thinner. Bend up a pair of hooks, stick on into each lower corner and pull.


Once its out just un plug the guages and your good to go.

Thin coathanger wire works fine. Get two pieces about 8 inches long. Bend a small right angle piece at one end (1/4 inch) and maybe a two inch right angle at he other end (to hold on to). Just be gentle and it will pop out. Work both sides at the same time.

I do not like the hooks, you run a chance of denting, piercing the vinyl dash when inserting. what i like to do is remove the knee covers and gently push from the back middle of the cluster with my hand until it pops out.

I would do that at least for the first time. Then you will get an idea of how to make a tool from a coat hanger and where you can pull from.

Also, be ready to mark everything. there are a lot of connections back there.

Despite the clocking pin the round connector can be fitted in the wrong orientation. The gauges and lights will be goofy and at least one wrong orientation will blow the oil pressure gauge. Ask me how I know
