The best way to find the oil source is to pull the turbo. If there is only oil in the outlet/down tube, Turbo. Oil in the exhaust manifold, valve stem seals or oil control ring(s).

It's also possible it's coming from the compressor side and making it's way through the engine.

I believe it's leaking on the cold side of the turbo then going into the motor. It seems to run very strong so I do not think it's anything major. It could be valve seals though...

When I removed the wrong downpipe I do not recall much if any oil in there, just a bunch of soot.

Hi

some of y'all guys mentioned rebuild kits for the turbo. Where can one of these be bought? I just checked with Phil (FastLane) who only sells rebuilt turbos and not the kits to the tune of $595 which is way outside of my budget.

Cheers

Bob

Thanks.

Are they on the internet or telephone?

It's amazing the amount of garbage/spam links you would get when you type : Mercedes turbo rebuild kit : into google.

Cheers

Check this place out:
http://www.eastcoastturbo.com/Secure/eCommerce/Catalog.asp?prdc=17

They used to charge $250 + $60 core for a complete drop in rebuild.

There is another thread here that lists all needed rebuild parts that can be had for around $20. I searched real quick but couldn't find it.
Use the search function and check around.

turbos

i have done 3 garrett turbos this year and I would not buy a kit... i buy the
parts seperately at diesel injection... really cheap... like 5 bucks...

there is no need to balance the turbine... it was balanced at the factory. Look on the back of it and you will see where they dug into it with what looks like a chiesel. Those are balancing marks....

All you need to do is mark it well so you put it back together in alignment. Clean the heck out of it... then clean it again. Replace the bearing and the seal... then torque it back together... If you find any metal cracks in the housing it is still useable... as long as they are not near the edge....

then the oil return is critical... clean it 10 times... and ensure it is right...I lost a turbo and had a car fire becasue of an oil return line.... that was messed up by a professional... that is when I learned how to fix turbos...
and started diy...

Cool, thanks for the information. Bad/expensive mechanics always force the DIY. Happened to me on a $600 Civic that cost $400 to do the rear brake drums.

The turbo wheels are not matched sets. The compressor is balanced separate from the turbine/shaft.

Just a T3 kit you need. I paid about $24 for all the bits needed...

Excellent! I'm feeling stupid today -- can you post up a parts list and a source to order them? I haven't found Diesel Injection yet...

Also, if the shaft moves up and down and back and forth, even just a tiny bit, is a rebuild going to fix it, or is it shot?

I'll try to find it. It came from M&D Diesel down in Houston. They're very close to the B100 place.

Torque Specs for Turbo Reassembly

I'm in the process of rebuilding the turbo on a 1991 350 SD. Does anyone have the torque specs or a procedure for reassembly? I'm particularly concerned about the turbine shaft nut.

Greg
