Hi,
maybe somebody had experience with glued head. Let me start from the beginning. My 87 300 d started to leak cooling liquid into the oil, and I think it is either the gasket or the head cracked. I unscrewed all and tried to pull the head off with the hoist but it does not move. Seems to me that somebody who worked on it before glued it with something, probably some gasket sealer. I am afraid to use too much power (the hoist was pulling the front of the car) so will not damage the head. Is there any other way to get the head off. Thank you for all ideas. |

Not to be a time waster ..
How many head bolts did you count? (and hopefully measure?)

I took out all screws according to my book. I am at work right now and not sure how many are, but will check tomorrow. Also took out 2 small ones in timing chain area.
Will reply tomorrow with the count. Thank you, zxdent |

I think there are 26 headbolts in total on the 603, FWIW.

Timing chain sprocket is off the cam, AT dipstick tube is off the head and turbo oil feed line is off the block, right?
If the exhaust manifold and turbo are still attached, lift the far end of the exhaust manifold for leverage. Sixto |

If you fit a -22- head in place of a -14- head you need longer bolts inside the timing chain cavity. I think the -14- head takes 30mm bolts and the -22- head takes 50mm bolts. Sixto |

There's a row under the cam, ask me how I know...
![]() I jerked on the motor for HOURS on my parts car trying to get that damned thing off there.

As Sixto mentioned, there are two small cap screws inside the timing chain cavity. It's like performing heart surgery to remove them without dropping them into the abyss.
![]() I was lifting the front end on the SD for a couple of attempts due to those two screws. ![]() |

Thank you all for your input
I will have to check tomorrow, morning (Sunday) and will reply how many screws are taken out. I know for sure that 2 small ones in the chain area are
out. Thanks again, zxdent |

Thanks to the person who told me that I need to remove 26 M10 bolts, after counting the ones I took off, there were only 19.
Looking very carefully I found them hidden under the camshaft brackets. Well I will try in a few days to pull the head off. Hope everything is going to be (much) better this time. Thanks all of you who helped. Zxdent |
