transmission mission

Hiya.
I need some technical advice, I'm converting a 1981 200t auto estate, to a 240d auto, the donor 240d is a 1984. The donor car's autobox whines horribly, especially in 4th, but otherwise seems quite smooth. It doesn't judder at all in reverse, which I'm informed is the acid test of whether these autobox's are knackered or not. It is the 1 piece alloy box with the webbing. I've little experience with auto's and I don't know whether the whine could be down to the torque converter or not.
The 200t is really low mileage, and the transmission is silky smooth. It has the steel autobox with the seperate bellhousing. I also have a good autobox from a 1984 300d which is the 2 piece also. Are the ratio's in these 2 boxes the same? can I just put the 300d bellhousing on the 200t box and mate it to a 240d engine?? Help!
