Can anyone tell me what are those clips on either side of the bonnet hinges?
Does it make the bonnet go higher? And how does it work.

Yeah, they release one at a time for higher hood/bonnet opening. You can see where they release the catch. Dunno about the 300SD, but on the 240D the catches can be bent with pliers for permanent high altitude hood opening capability.
