722.1 tranny keeps blowing rear seal

I bought a 1978 300D which the PO gave up on because the rear seal kept blowing out. When I got it the fluid would dribble out the rear even at idle. Last night while taking it for a spin around the block the seal BLEW and spewed all of the tranny fluid in the matter of seconds.
Could a dirty filter do this or is there some other deamon?

check for a vent tube on the top of the tranny. If it's plugged it will do that.

I was thinking of that too. I haven't had a chance to climb under it yet.
