Too much play in the Steering Box
Hello All,
I was wondering if there is anyway to tighten up the play on the steering box of a 1983 300D? It seem a bit too much for me. All other components seem to be tight except at the box. Thanks in advanced for your help. |

The search button is your friend....
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/search.php?searchid=776946 only do 1/8 at a turn at a time, and remember, turn COUNTER CLOCK WISE to tighten.

One inch of play is within specs for that box. The steering box is the absolute last thing to adjust when trying to eliminate play. All of your front ends needs to be tight first. My steering box has never been touched. Every time there has been excessive play, it has been because of front end issues. If your front end has never been rebuilt, it is way overdue.

it should be fairly easy to determine where the play is. just get down or use a lift and get under and have someone wiggle the steering wheel while you examine the steering components for play.
i have adjusted the box with less than 100k showing before. there is nothing nicer than the steering being spot on with no play or very minimal. tom w
