Best oil for summer.

Can anyone tell me what brand and type of oil they would think is suitable for a 82 300sd in the summer?(300,000 miles) And whether or not lucas additive can potentially lower your oil pressure when used with walmart brand oil(15w40) by clogging the pickup in the oil pan?Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike J.

I would run Delo 15/40 or Rotella 15/40 year round! I wouldn't run Walmart anything! I personally run Delo because I buy it at Costco. I even run it in my '55 VW with a 1700cc engine. The oil pressure will drop as the weather warms up. Idle at 1 bar or 15 psi is ok. If you are concerned about checking the oil pickup, pull the small pan and ck.

When Mobil 1 Truck & SUV 5W-40 was available, I'd run it for my two or three cold weather changes and in the summer, I did run Rotella T 15W-40 until I heard really good things about Mobil 1 Delvac 1300 super, same weight as the Rotella. I've ran it ever since and will continue to until the new Mobil 1 Turbodiesel synthetic oil is available. The 1300 super is the same price as the Rotella at the Autozone where I get it. This is also one of those threads where a search would have yielded more answers and opinions than you could digest in one sitting.

I've been running Rotella 5w40 "synthetic" - liking it so far.

Delvac 1 5w40 is the only choice, IMHO.

adrenelin,

Mobil 1 15W50 has kept my 300SD running well for 165,000 miles. It now has 275,000 and runs about as good as ever. Always changed oil every 10,000 miles.

I have used Mobuil 1 Truck and SUV oil since it came out but I'm waiting for the Mobil TurboDiesel oil to become available.

Are you serious about that 10,000 miles thing? In a 617?

Summer oil

Something that goes good in a glass with lots of ice! (Sorry, it was over 100F here again today.)

For the record, Mercedes-Benz does not advocate any use of engine oil additives. All you need is a GOOD diesel rated oil changed "hot and often" as Mr. Larry Bible puts it with a "proper" filter at regular intervals.

If you want to see what Lucas does to oil, look here.

Ralph,

10,000 miles oil and filter changes for a 617? Certainly.

Although I have not done an oil analysis, others have on 10,000 mile oil from 617 engines which show there was no problem using oil synthetic that long.

Let it be known that this car is used mostly for long trips and almost always gets the oil up to operating temperature each time it is started. For many short trips and city driving, 10,000 mile oil and filter changes might not apply.

I'm guessing that wouldn't be recommended with dino oil, which I'm using...

All the same I might not feel so bad about putting off an oil change for a bit when life makes her demands...

Interesting. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I remeber reading on this forum about someone, I don't remember who, who had an oil analysis on a 10,000 mile change said that their soot levels were too high. I think he went back to 6000 mile changes. I also know a couple people who tried 10,000 mile changes on other turbo diesels and their turbos didn't last.

I run 70% to 80% dino oil and 20% to 30% synthetic and do 6000 mile changes.

I've started using the Amsoil Diesel oil and been very happy with it. Prior, only ran Mobil 1 synth. The Amsoil has made the engine slightly quieter.

Meh

I just use Delo 400 or Rotella 15W40. Sometimes the Delvac 1300. Synthetic oils scare me; I have pictures of all kinds of gaskets starting to leak, and general disaster since its been run on dino for life. Every 3000 with a fresh filter, for me.

That was me. A copy of my oil analysis is in post #128, here:

I'm pretty much sticking to 5-6000 mile changes with synthetic.
