Quick question about vacuum/breathing?

I've noticed this last year that my valve cover and air filter housing are getting a little more oil and crud on them, and its coming from the tubes that run from the valve cover to the air cleaner housing. Is this normal? Seems to be a little spray that builds up over time, but lately it seems to be a little more. Just wondering. Everything works as it should.

Do you have the stock breather hose, or one of these?

I use the upgraded hose and put a clamp on the connection on the valve cover, that seems to pretty much eliminate the mess.

My 300SD turbo which should have basically the same setup stays pretty dry.

I would venture a guess that the device in the air cleaner housing that is supposed to collect vapor from the valve cover may not be pulling it in
(just a thought). Another possibility is that something else is producing the oil
mist and it is collecting up top.

For instance a power steering pump front seal can leak and leave almost no
residue on the pump (mine leaked this way), but it left a film of oil above and
around other areas.

Do a full cleaning (pressure wash, steam pressure, chemical/degreaser rinse, etc).
Then observe each day the build up, this will point at what is leaking out.

I think that at the oil pan where the tube from the air cleaner fits in to recapture the valve cover blowby there is a valve that can stick.
This would cause the same symptoms you describe.
