Bens,
Connect the Neg terminal of the battery to the frame of the starter. Connect the Pos terminal of the battery to the large empty stud on the solonoid. Connect a short wire to the screw terminal on the solonoid. 1: Touch the short wire to the large stud of the solonoid. This is equilivalent to turning the key to start position. Solonoid should engage and starter should run. 2: If it doesn't, jump the pos wire from the solonoid directly to the terminal on the starter. Starter should run. If it doesn't, something is wrong with the starter. 3: If starter runs in test 2 and didn't run in test 1, solonoid is not working. Note that U are not testing the current draw or torque of the starter in these tests so even if they work it doesn't mean the starter will crank the engine sufficiently. Its best to clamp the starter like in a vise to keep it from jumping around if it runs. Dont worry about a few sparks, starters draw high current. P E H |
