Question Starter Removal Question

I need to replace the starter/solenoid on my 85 Cal version 300D Turbo. The following thread and pictures provides a goodly amount of info, but it involves an SD model.

Will these instructions and procedures hold true for my car also?

Some folks mentioned having to drop the transmission 3". It is defintely going to be a tight squeeze to get it down and out, but I really hate to do that if I can extract it by turning the wheels all the way to left and removing one end of the steering damper.

It appears 85 Cal versions require a unique starter/solenoid part that is not interchangeable with 81-84 Calif or 81-85 Federal. Can anybody explain why?

My real issue is the solenoid does not always transfer power to the out bound hot terminal connected to the starter. Appears the solenoid is kicking the necessary mechanical parts, so I thought about piggybacking another seperate solenoid in parallel to what's there. Anybody try this yet?

My wife isn't too thrilled with having to carry a ball pean hammer with her to rap the unit when it acts up.
Thanks,
Gene
