99 E300td water pump replacement

My wife was driving the car when it lost power on the freeway. She pulled over and it would go in 1st gear but 2nd had no power.so she called a tow truck to take it home I was out of town. The tow truck driver said it had antifreeze under it when He pulled it up on the rollback. They looked at it when they dropped it off and there was coolant under the resivoir.I stareted it when I got home today fired right up I did check coolant and oil level first coolant only about a 1/4 low in bottle.I let it idle for about 15 to 20 min and the temp got above 80c My son then told me it was running above that the other night also it usualy runs at or below 80c . I think the pump has broken its impeller it makes a buzzing noise while running thats the best I can describe it sounds like the plastic fins rubbing on the housing.Anyway any body done one of these got any tips. Also this car must shut off fuel when overheating happens .And I do not know what the temp gauge said on the freeyway she never looked at it.

I pulled the pump and found that the impeller had cracked and was spining on the shaft.Pic below

How many miles on it when that happened? Any hints on R/R or is it pretty straightforward?

Thumbs up

Should be almost similar to the removal from a 603. Just yank it, clean the surfaces, new gasket, bolt up, and torque properly

Good time to get the proper coolant in there too...

Car has 114k on it. And it did have the correct antifreeze in it.

remove fan shroud it will come past fan, press carefully against rad and push back on blades if needed. I removed the fan from the clutch but that is not needed I was unsure of the way the bolt was going to unthread it turns out to be normal and not reverse threads like I thought it would be.Using fan belt grab it on the left side of the pump between alt and pump and squeeze upper and lower parts of belt together this will hold pully so you can remove bolt that holds fan clutch to pump shaft.
Loosen pully bolts as above method
Remove belt
remove pully
Remove timing pointer this is a poor design the pointer can be moved on its mounting bolt so you will need to look carefully at the pointer to get it reinstalled in the right position.Mine had yellow paint on it so you could tell that it had been removed a factory safety measure maybe.
The crankshaft balancer has a rounded cut out in it so you can get to the bolts on the bottom of the pump. They are torks head so you will need torks sockets, you have to move the tensioner around to get to the bolts and to remove the pump.

Hi

Let me guess your pump looked like this pic once removed, failed on mine at 228000miles, starting to discover that this is a design fault. New pump has an aluminium impellor.

99 e300 water pump replacement

Old post but I did just use it to replace the water pump on my '99 E300, thanks. Plastic impeller was broken into 3 pieces. ** You can also lock the pump in place by inserting a small rod (5mm allen wrench fits) into the back side of the pump flange. There are two extra holes that the wrench will insert into. It will jam against the pump housing as you loosen or tighten the bolts on the front of the fan or pulley.

Factory rebuilt pump has a metal impeller...
