New Exhaust for 300SD

The exhaust on my 300sd seems to be completely gone. The exhaust past the downpipe rusted out some time ago but now it seems that the downpipe is damaged as well. It seems like it is cracked all the way through. I went into an exhaust shop today in the washington, DC area and i was quoted 600$ for an exhaust turbo down. This seems like a reasonable price but I'm a student and all I want is a pipe from the turbo to the back of the car which I'm sure can be had for less. I'm headed down to school at UVA in the Charlotesville area so if anyone knows any shops down there or has any other ideas on an exhaust I would really appreciate. The car is a 1983 300SD 126 chasis. Thanks

$600 sounds like a lot. Is it using Mercedes parts?

I think (although I haven't priced it out) you could go to a muffler shop and get a custom set up cheaper.

I recently modified the exhaust on the SD by eliminating the resonators.

I think you'd be ahead of the game by ordering a stock downpipe and a stock rear muffler. The shop can then fabricate a connecting piece between the end of the downpipe and the entrance to the rear muffler.

The total cost should then be about $400.

Of course, if you can live without the rear muffler, then the cost should be less than $300 if you use the factory downpipe.

Thanks for the replies. The man I spoke to said he would be ordering the downpipe from MB nd then using his own parts for the rest of the system. I figured he was trying to get over tough because he quickly came down from 650. I have no trouble at all because I've been running with just the downpipe for quite some time now. I figure I'll just get a new downpipe and then have someone weld a straight pipe from that. Ill definetly check out the bosal system you were talking about.

I made a exhaust for 120$ CAD. All you need is 12 foot of 2.5-3 in pipe
and a muffler. Get any muffler shop to make two 90's and two 45's
weld it all together and add a few hangers. If you know a welder,
it will only take 30-40 min to weld up. I droped my exhaust and made
one from it. Without the resonators of course. Jay

Lentz USA did mine from the downpipe all the way to the back of the car including a truck muffler for $220. I eliminated the resonators, not louder at all, I can just hear some of the lower tones at certain RPM's, and its awesome!

That's what I'm doing with Project 420. Gonna drop the resonators with the Euro headers.

Oh yes, it's nearing the end. Last of the parts are being ordered tonight (misc seals, tensioner, few tools, cams, etc).

Here's how my home-made system looks:

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=124041

I've been using since without any problems. The 300 series stainless is just as shinny as the day I installed it (except from the oil leaks blown back from the engine).
