617A problems

The head on my 617A is shot and I have a bad rear main leak. I am a bit torn concerning what to do. Does anyone know if it is possible to check the condition of the block and its probable future reliability with a head that is shot? (compression testing likely being out of the question?!?). Is it likely that a decent backyard mechanic can r&r the rear main seal and possibly even re-build the head if I can get my grubby hands on a decent manual? I have heard that the block rebuild is a pretty involved job, not something to be done without experience. Am I correct? What do people think about doing just the head and not the block, is it a bad idea? Lastly, does anyone know of a good source for used engines? I have checked the local wreckers and there is nothing. Given the age of these engines, is used even a good option?

Sorry for all the questions, but I want to try to get a sense for where I'm at and what my options are before I make a move.

Steve
