Difference between 5cyl and 6cyl oil filter?

I went to buy an oil filter at Autozone, and they only had one made by STP listed. But the filter looks exactly like the one in my 300SD that I could get made by Fram. Is there a difference between the two filters? I'd prefer to use a Fram filter.

The 603 engine uses a different oil filter than the 616/617 engine. The 603 filter is the same diameter, but shorter.

Please don't use a Fram. Get a Hengst or Mann.

Looks like Fram was the winner of that contest. Where was Mann?

I don't know what filter is best. But from 30+ years of working on gassers I am of the opinion that Frams are too restrictive, causing so much bypass that very little of the oil gets filtered. I wonder what is the best brand ???

A lot of people tore apart their filters (for 617's) a while back and the consenus was that the made in Turkey Fram filters were the best. That thread is still around somewhere.

The OEM filters had cotton gin waste in the bypass section and there was speculation that they were all actually made in the same factory in India. Wix filters seemed to be of a good quality but they lack the bypass section, not to mention the O-ring they come with is the wrong size and a PITA to get on.

I'm using a Made in Turkey Fram now and in my not-so-expert opinion they seem to be well-made...

Thumbs up

Just get one for the 603 and motor on. Of all the one's I've used, they were all full of crap. As long as you change the oil every 5K (or less) you'll be fine.

Turkish delite

I concur with the Turkish Fram consensus. Do be cautious when shopping, however -- some Frams are made in Mexico and do not have a good reputation, or so it has been reported here.

I tore apart many 603 filters last year on my own. I use an OE in mine, guess why.

The 603 and 617 use different filters, apples and oranges you cannot compare them. 617 filters come from more sources.

Just an FYI, the STP filter for the 603 is actualy a Mann, and the quality is decent. The Fram is different from all of them, and uses string insted of cotten. Its not a bad choice, but I did notice a slight drop in oil pressure, maybe it was just me.

With the 603 you have three choices:
The OE filter which is pretty good.
Every other brand, Wix, Mann, Hegnst, Car Quest, STP, whatever are all about the same. IE same source with a different box or label. In the case of the STP and Car Quest they don't try to hide this.
And Fram which kind of does there own thing.

I had bought the STP for my 603, but the O-ring that came with it...sucked. And i started getting oil leaks from the filter housing due to the o-ring failing to do its job. So i had switched to a mahle filter and the 0-ring with that hasnt failed and the leaks stopped.

When there was a sale on the fram filters at kragen (2for$7) i had put an order for two of the fram filters since they didnt carry them for the 603. But didnt buy them....because printed on the filter was "made in mexico"

And i asked them if there was another one that was made in turkey. But the computer only listed the one they gave me. So i dont know if they have a turkish made filter for the 603.

I never had a problem with any filter brands O ring. But I use a 1/4 drive to tighten the nuts.

The STP filter I ended up with says made in India. It looks like it's really poor quality, it's already corroded.
