do you have to remone the oil pan

Simple Question. Could Be A Stupid Question OR SHOULD I SAY QUESTIONS. Why When I Change My Oil Does The Dipstick Still Show That The Oil Is Black. Is It That There Is So Much Old Oil Still Left. I've Just Put 5 To 7 Quarts Of Oil In It. Is The Worst Of The Oil Residue Remaining In The Oil Pan. Is There A Way To Clean It Out More Without Removeing The Oil Pan. Not That I'm Going To Remove It. Just A Question That Has Always Bothered Me

Black oil immediately after an oil change on a diesel is normal.

The oil cooler does not drain, so the oil will be black right after an oil change.

Ditto......
"Carbon Black"/ soot is generated by all diesels. It is in every oil galley, cooler and passage in the engine. Oil designed for diesels has heavy detergents and other agents to pick up the carbon and keep it in suspension so it does not cake up and create a blockage that would cause parts of the engine to be "oil starved".....I would worry if the oil did not turn black!
Cheers,

even new diesels like the 05 VW passat TDI has black oil. It just has to do with the soot. I remember when my friend was first looking at MB diesels his dad wanted the car inspected because he thought the black oil meant something was wrong

But i had explained to him it had to do with the soot from the fuel that turns it black unlike gas cars.

Even if the oil is black, you can still usually tell if the oil is new or not. With a recent oil change, the oil has a slight amber tint and "depth" similar to many layers of clear coat. When the oil is really soot laden and old that depth disappears.

I have two low millage 240Ds, both have NO oil cooler and the oil is still black shortly after an oil change, which I thought was normal for ANY diesel but............I change the "94"Dodge/Cummins oil and its still a light honey color after 3K.

There are no stupid questions except in politics (I'm getting ready for this fall).
Often explaining a process or technique forces one to rethink every step and thus finding a flaw. Sometimes the strange question jogs something loose and the great idea jumps out.
Maybe one day Newton was braging on his great knowledge to a sweet young thing concerning gravity/apples and ... "It fell 'cause not'n was push'n it up, DAHHHH"!
